Motorist Miraculously Survives Train Collision with Car in Lagos

A 55-year-old motorist narrowly escaped injury after his Honda car, with registration number EKY 902 JT, was struck by a moving train at the PWD railway crossing in Lagos State. The collision occurred on Tuesday as the train was en route to Agege, causing extensive damage to the vehicle but leaving the driver unharmed. The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) swiftly responded to the incident, coordinating with security personnel to rescue the driver and remove the damaged car from the tracks, allowing the train to resume its journey.

The accident led to significant traffic congestion around the PWD axis, disrupting normal movement for several hours. Despite the clearance of the wreckage, delays persisted due to the volume of vehicles attempting to navigate the affected area. LASTMA officials worked diligently to manage the situation and restore order, highlighting the importance of prompt emergency response in such critical incidents.

Following the rescue operation, the wrecked vehicle was handed over to security agencies for further investigation into the circumstances that led to the collision. Authorities are expected to determine whether the driver attempted to cross the tracks while the train was approaching or already in motion, which could be a violation of railway safety protocols.

Olalekan Bakare-Oki, General Manager of LASTMA, commended the efforts of his team and collaborating security personnel for their quick and coordinated response. He emphasized that effective collaboration among agencies is essential during emergencies involving rail and road operations. Bakare-Oki urged motorists to exercise caution when approaching railway crossings and to never attempt to cross tracks when a train is visible or heard nearby.

He warned that “reckless disregard for railway safety protocols could precipitate devastating and irreversible consequences.” The LASTMA boss stressed the need for public awareness and strict adherence to traffic rules and safety guidelines. The agency reiterated that preserving human life must always be the top priority in all road-use decisions.

LASTMA also called on all road users to remain vigilant and responsible, especially near railway lines where the risk of accidents is high. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by ignoring safety measures at level crossings. As Lagos continues to experience rapid urban growth and increased transportation demands, ensuring compliance with safety regulations becomes even more crucial.

This collision underscores the need for continued public education and improved infrastructure at railway crossings across the state. Moving forward, authorities will likely intensify monitoring and enforcement to prevent similar occurrences and protect lives on both roads and rails.
