BREAKING: Explosion at Lagos Market Leaves One Injured, Police Confirm

An explosion suspected to be caused by an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) occurred at the Shoe Materials Market in Mushin, Lagos State, resulting in one person injured and prompting a swift response from the Lagos State Police Command. The incident, which took place on Monday, led to the immediate deployment of police officers and Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) experts to secure the area. Commissioner of Police, Mr Fatai Tijani, confirmed the details while addressing journalists at the scene, emphasizing that the area had been sealed off and thoroughly inspected for safety.

The IED, according to Tijani, was planted under the passenger side of a vehicle and detonated when the vehicle was started. This caused the explosion that injured one individual, who was promptly rushed to a nearby hospital. The injured person is currently receiving medical treatment and is reported to be in stable condition. Authorities have not identified the victim’s name or the exact nature of the injuries, but they confirmed that no further casualties were recorded.

Following a comprehensive sweep of the market and surrounding areas, police stated that no additional explosive devices were discovered. The EOD team conducted a detailed examination to ensure public safety and prevent any secondary attacks. Tijani reassured the public that the situation is under control and urged residents and traders to remain calm and continue with their daily activities without fear.

The police commissioner emphasized that the command is actively investigating the incident and working to identify those responsible. He called on anyone with information to come forward and assist in the probe. The Shoe Materials Market, a busy commercial hub in Mushin, was temporarily closed during the investigation but has since reopened with increased security presence.

This incident adds to growing concerns about security in commercial areas across Lagos, especially in densely populated districts like Mushin. While the motive behind the explosion remains unclear, authorities are treating it as a potential act of sabotage or criminal activity. The Lagos State Police Command has promised to update the public as more details emerge.

The explosion serves as a reminder of the need for vigilance in public spaces, particularly in markets and transport hubs. As investigations continue, security agencies are expected to enhance patrols and surveillance in high-risk zones. The incident underscores the importance of community cooperation in preventing and reporting suspicious activities.
