Military Arrests Three Boko Haram and ISWAP Suspects in Borno State

Troops of Operation Hadin Kai have arrested three suspected collaborators of Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) in Monguno Local Government Area of Borno State, marking a significant security development in the ongoing fight against terrorism in the northeast. The arrests took place on April 13, 2024, in the Abari general area, following a coordinated operation by Sector 3 Military Intelligence Brigade and members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF). The suspects, identified as Falmata Abukar, 43; Halima Audu, 35; and Mairo Abba, 17, were intercepted while attempting to travel from Abari to Mararaba village in Kukawa Local Government Area. Security sources confirmed that the trio was apprehended during routine surveillance and intelligence-driven operations aimed at disrupting insurgent supply chains.

The suspects were found in possession of several items believed to be logistics supplies for terrorist operatives in the Lake Chad region. Among the recovered materials were 12 pairs of suspected terrorist uniform fabrics, 176 bottles of herbicide, 22 wrappers, 24 assorted children’s clothes, a mosquito net, a mat, and a sum of N15,500 in cash. These items, according to security analysts, are commonly used by insurgents for camouflage, concealment, and basic survival needs in remote areas. The herbicide, in particular, is often repurposed by insurgents for improvised explosive devices or other tactical uses, highlighting the growing sophistication of their logistical networks.

The information was shared by security analyst Zagazola Makama via a post on X, where he emphasized the importance of intelligence cooperation between military units and civilian task forces. Makama noted that the successful interception underscores the effectiveness of joint operations in curbing the movement of supplies to terrorist cells. The suspects are currently in military custody and undergoing preliminary investigations to determine their exact roles and possible connections to active Boko Haram or ISWAP units operating in the region. Authorities are also working to trace any additional networks or accomplices linked to the suspects.

This arrest comes amid heightened security activities in Borno State, where military and civilian forces continue to target insurgent logistics and recruitment efforts. The Lake Chad axis remains a critical zone for counter-terrorism operations due to its proximity to porous borders and dense rural communities. The recovery of uniform materials and other supplies indicates that insurgents are still actively seeking to replenish their resources despite sustained military pressure. The ongoing investigations may reveal further details about the extent of local collaboration and the routes used by terrorists to move supplies.

As security forces intensify surveillance in border communities and rural areas, this operation serves as a reminder of the persistent threat posed by extremist groups. The successful arrest of these suspects could disrupt a potential supply line and weaken insurgent operations in the region. Moving forward, continued intelligence sharing and community engagement will be crucial in maintaining the momentum against terrorism in northeastern Nigeria.
