Lagos Police Arrest 135 Suspected Cultists, Seize 26 Firearms in Coordinated Raids

Lagos State Police Command has arrested 135 suspected cultists and recovered 26 firearms during a series of coordinated raids across known criminal hotspots in the state, as part of efforts to prevent violence linked to the upcoming July 7 cult celebration. The operation, carried out on the directive of Commissioner of Police, CP Tijani Fatai, PSC, MNIPS, targeted areas where rival cult groups were believed to be planning attacks and other criminal activities. Officers from Area Commands, Divisional Police Officers (DPOs), Tactical Commanders, and the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) participated in the joint crackdown.

The raids were conducted based on credible intelligence suggesting that cult groups were preparing for violent clashes ahead of the 7/7 cult initiation festivities. Police emphasized that the primary goal was to disrupt planned criminal activities and ensure public safety across Lagos. The operation successfully dismantled several hideouts used by cultists, leading to the seizure of dangerous weapons and other illicit materials.

In addition to the 26 firearms, officers recovered 16 dangerous weapons including cutlasses, battle axes, daggers, and knives. Other items seized included cult insignia, assorted charms, 11 bottles of different alcoholic brands, substances suspected to be Indian hemp, and other illicit drugs. Six mobile phones were also confiscated, likely used for coordinating criminal activities. These items were recovered from multiple locations during the raids, indicating a well-organized network of cult operatives.

Police stated that investigations are ongoing to identify and apprehend other members of the criminal gangs who remain at large. The suspects currently in custody will be charged to court once investigations are completed. The command reiterated its commitment to maintaining law and order, particularly during sensitive periods such as the 7/7 celebration, which has historically been linked to violent incidents in the state.

This operation underscores the Lagos State Police Command’s proactive approach to crime prevention and its focus on dismantling criminal networks before they can cause harm. The recovery of firearms and other weapons highlights the potential threat posed by cult groups and the importance of timely intervention. As the investigation continues, authorities are urging members of the public to report any suspicious activities to help maintain peace and security. The crackdown is expected to serve as a deterrent to others involved in cultism and violent crime across Lagos.
