Former entertainer and ex-member of the Imo State House of Assembly, Uche Ogbuagu, has emerged as the People Democratic Party (PDP) flag bearer for the 2027 House of Representatives election in Imo State, alongside three women and four other candidates. The selection followed a state-wide primary election held on May 17, 2024, across all 27 Local Government Areas of Imo State. The PDP’s victory in this primary marks a significant step in its campaign strategy for the 2027 general elections, with the party emphasizing gender inclusivity and grassroots representation.
Among the newly elected candidates are Oleka Chinedu, who will contest for the Ahiazu/Ezinihitte Federal Constituency; Peace Adanna Nwadike, representing the Nkwere/Nwangele/Njaba/Isu Federal Constituency; and Olachi Ndidi Iheme, who will vie for the Owerri Federal Constituency. These women’s emergence is seen as a major milestone for women’s participation in Nigerian politics, particularly in a state like Imo, where political leadership has traditionally been male-dominated.
The party spokesperson, Lancelot Obiaku, highlighted that the selection of these women reflects the PDP’s commitment to the constitutional 35% affirmative action policy for women in elective and appointive positions. He credited the party chairman, Austin Nwachukwu, for championing this inclusive approach, ensuring that women have equal opportunities to contest and win political offices. Obiaku emphasized that the candidates were chosen based on merit, integrity, and proven leadership qualities.
Other candidates include Chief Samuel Christian Onye, President of the Igbo Community in Gboko, Benue State, who will represent the Okigwe/Onuimo/Isiala Mbano Federal Constituency. Ikenna Emeruem has been selected for the Ehime Mbano/Ihitte Uboma/Obowo Federal Constituency, while Joseph Chukwuma Ikunna will contest for the Ohaji/Egbema/Oguta/Oru West Federal Constituency. Each candidate brings unique experience and local support to the table, according to party officials.
The Imo PDP expressed confidence in the ability of all flag bearers to deliver results in the 2027 elections, citing their strong character, experience, and competence. The party has called on all leaders and members to unite behind the candidates, mobilizing support and resources to ensure victory. With the primary concluded, the focus now shifts to campaign preparations, voter education, and building a strong grassroots network across the state.
This development positions the PDP as a serious contender in Imo State’s 2027 political landscape, with a diverse and inclusive slate of candidates ready to represent the people. The party’s emphasis on gender equity and local leadership may resonate with voters seeking change and representation. As the election draws nearer, the PDP’s candidates will aim to consolidate support and build momentum for a successful campaign.
