The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has firmly denied reports that its presidential candidate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, threatened to leave the party, stating that such claims are baseless speculations aimed at undermining the party’s credibility. In a statement issued on Saturday night, NDC National Publicity Secretary Osa Director dismissed the allegations as media conjecture and political sabotage. He emphasized that Kwankwaso never made any threats to exit the party, and the claims were being fueled by the ruling party and certain opposition figures who oppose the NDC’s rise.
Director spoke during an interview with Arise News, where he accused political opponents of spreading misinformation to demarket the NDC ahead of the upcoming elections. He pointed out that the allegations were not only unfounded but also part of a broader strategy to weaken the party’s campaign momentum. He highlighted a specific incident in Delta State, where an incumbent official allegedly backed multiple aspirants against the party’s endorsed candidate, Collins Edema, further illustrating the challenges the NDC faces from within and outside the party.
Earlier reports had circulated that Kwankwaso, the former governor of Kano State, was considering leaving the NDC if his preferred candidates in Kano were replaced. These reports gained traction after the party replaced several candidates originally submitted by the Kwankwasiyya faction. The decision was made following an internal review that cited a breach of a power-sharing agreement between the existing NDC leadership and the Kwankwasiyya bloc. The changes were formalized in a document signed by Kano State NDC Chairman, Hon. Hussaini Isah Mairiga, which outlined the agreed distribution of party positions and elective tickets.
The NDC’s internal restructuring in Kano State reflects ongoing efforts to ensure fairness and adherence to party agreements. The party insists that all decisions were made transparently and in line with its constitutional framework. Director reiterated that the party remains united and focused on its campaign goals, urging Nigerians to disregard rumors and focus on the NDC’s platform and vision for the country.
As the 2023 general elections approach, the NDC is positioning itself as a credible alternative to the dominant political parties. The party’s leadership remains committed to delivering on its promises, and the clarification on Kwankwaso’s stance reinforces its internal cohesion. The coming weeks will be critical as the NDC seeks to solidify its support base and counter any attempts to destabilize its campaign.
