At least three women were killed and several others injured in a violent attack by suspected Fulani militias on a mining site in Rakum community, Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State. The incident occurred around 4:30 pm on Monday, when armed men stormed the site and opened fire on workers engaged in daily mining activities. Eyewitnesses reported that the attackers emerged from nearby rocks and bushes before unleashing gunfire, causing chaos and panic among the victims. The assailants fled the scene after the assault, leaving behind a trail of bloodshed and fear.
A survivor named John Sabo recounted the horror to journalists, describing how the attackers targeted people who were simply trying to earn a living. He emphasized that innocent civilians should not be forced to live in constant fear while carrying out legitimate economic activities. “We are deeply worried because people should be able to go about their legitimate businesses without being attacked,” Sabo said. He urged security agencies to step up efforts to track down the perpetrators and prevent future attacks in the community.
Rwang Tengwong, National Publicity Secretary of the Berom Youth Moulders-Association (BYM), confirmed the tragedy and expressed deep concern over the worsening security situation. He stated that the attack was yet another tragic development that has further undermined peace in the region. “The incident happened at Rakum. Three women were killed, while another person was injured when the attackers stormed the mining site and opened fire,” Tengwong said. He stressed that the perpetrators continue to defy calls for peace and remain unwilling to lay down their weapons.
Tengwong called on security operatives to act swiftly and decisively to apprehend those responsible. “We are calling on the security operatives to immediately go after the perpetrators and ensure that those responsible are arrested and brought to justice,” he pleaded. He noted that this latest violence is part of a disturbing pattern of escalating attacks across Plateau State, particularly in Mangu, Barkin Ladi, Riyom, and Bokkos Local Government Areas. Despite a curfew imposed by the state government to curb insecurity, violent incidents have continued to rise.
The attack has reignited fears among residents and workers in mining communities, who now face growing threats to their lives and livelihoods. With no immediate signs of respite, many are demanding stronger protection and more effective intervention from both security forces and government authorities. This incident underscores the urgent need for sustained security operations and community engagement to restore lasting peace in Plateau State.
