The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has intensified its enforcement operations across Lagos State, arresting 14 individuals and seizing numerous carts used by illegal waste collectors in separate raids. The operations, conducted on Monday, targeted areas including Idumota, Oke-Popo, Tom Jones, and Tinubu in Lagos Island, as well as the Lagos-Badagry Expressway. These actions are part of LAWMA’s ongoing efforts to combat illegal dumping and unauthorised waste collection, which threaten public health and environmental sustainability.
LAWMA’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, confirmed the arrests during a statement shared via the Lagos State Government’s official Instagram page. He emphasized that the enforcement exercises reflect the authority’s firm commitment to ensuring compliance with established waste management regulations. Gbadegesin noted that one of the key offences uncovered was the illegal disposal of waste into the lagoon, an act that poses serious risks to marine ecosystems and coastal communities.
The seized carts were reportedly being used by suspects engaged in unauthorized waste collection activities along major routes such as the Lagos-Badagry Expressway. These vehicles, often operated without proper permits or oversight, bypass official waste collection systems and contribute to environmental degradation. By removing them from circulation, LAWMA aims to strengthen the state’s formal waste management infrastructure and reduce pollution hotspots.
Dr. Gbadegesin stressed that these operations are not isolated incidents but part of a broader strategy to uphold the integrity of Lagos’s waste disposal system. He warned that any activity undermining the approved channels for waste collection and disposal will face strict consequences. The authority is determined to ensure that refuse is handled responsibly through licensed operators and designated collection points.
