Troops of Sector 3, Joint Task Force North East, under Operation HADIN KAI, have successfully intercepted a suspected foreign terrorist drug courier transporting a large quantity of illicit drugs, alcoholic beverages, and other prohibited substances in Borno State. The operation, conducted on Thursday along the Maiduguri–Monguno axis, led to the arrest of a 48-year-old Chadian national, Mrs. Rachael Samuel, who was found in possession of dangerous contraband believed to be destined for terrorist elements operating in the Lake Chad Islands. The military confirmed the seizure during intensive search operations near Kwatan Doron Baga in Kukawa Local Government Area, highlighting the ongoing threat posed by smuggling networks linked to insurgency activities.
The intercepted items include seven compressed bundles of suspected Cannabis sativa weighing approximately 30 kilogrammes, two 10-litre containers of hydromercuric chloride, commonly known as “Suck and Die,” and a carton containing 48 bottles of dry gin. Additionally, 61 bottles of herbal alcoholic beverages were recovered, all of which are estimated to have a combined market value running into millions of Naira. These substances are not only illegal but also pose serious health and security risks, particularly when diverted to armed groups in conflict zones. The military also seized one mobile phone, two ATM cards, personal effects, and cash from the suspect, indicating possible financial and logistical coordination with criminal or terrorist networks.
According to the army’s statement released on X, preliminary investigations suggest the consignment was being transported to locations within the Lake Chad Islands, an area long known for harboring terrorist elements. The region has been a hotspot for Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) activities, making the interception a critical step in disrupting their supply chains. The suspect is currently in military custody, and all recovered exhibits have been secured. Authorities have pledged to hand over the evidence to the appropriate law enforcement agencies for further investigation and prosecution in line with existing laws.
This operation underscores the Nigerian military’s commitment to combating both terrorism and drug trafficking, which often intersect in the northeast. The seizure of high-value narcotics and dangerous chemicals demonstrates the sophistication of smuggling routes used by criminal networks. It also highlights the importance of cross-border cooperation in addressing security threats that transcend national boundaries. The continued presence of foreign nationals involved in such activities points to the need for enhanced intelligence-sharing and border surveillance.
The successful interception serves as a warning to those attempting to exploit the region’s instability for illicit gains. As security forces remain vigilant, the public is encouraged to report suspicious activities. This incident reinforces the military’s role in safeguarding national security and maintaining public order, especially in areas affected by prolonged conflict. The outcome of the investigation will likely inform future counter-terrorism and anti-narcotics strategies in the region.
