A tragic stampede at Emirate Hotel in Ikere-Ekiti has claimed the lives of three people, including two students from Bamidele Olumilua University of Education, Science and Technology (BOUESTI) and a hotel staff member, prompting a full investigation by the Ekiti State Police Command. The incident occurred in the early hours of April 19, 2026, following a post-convocation party that took place after the university’s graduation ceremony on April 18, 2026. The event, which was meant to celebrate academic achievements, turned deadly when a fight broke out between two unidentified students, leading to panic and a chaotic rush to exit the premises.

Preliminary findings from the police indicate that the argument quickly escalated into a physical altercation, causing other guests to panic and flee the hotel. The sudden rush created a stampede, resulting in the deaths of three individuals. The victims have been identified as two BOUESTI students and one hotel employee, though their names have not yet been released. The bodies have since been taken to the morgue for autopsy to determine the exact cause of death and to aid in the ongoing investigation.

Commissioner of Police for Ekiti State, CP Falade Adegoroye Michael, has ordered a comprehensive probe into the circumstances surrounding the incident. He expressed deep condolences to the families and friends of the deceased, urging the public to remain calm while authorities carry out their duties. CP Adegoroye emphasized that the police will leave no stone unturned in uncovering the full facts and ensuring justice for the victims. He also called on witnesses to come forward with any information that could assist in the investigation.

The State Public Relations Officer of the Police Command, SP Sunday Abutu, confirmed that the investigation is still ongoing. He stated that police are collecting evidence, interviewing witnesses, and reviewing security footage from the hotel to reconstruct the events leading up to the stampede. Authorities are also working closely with university officials and hotel management to gather more details about the party and the security measures in place at the time.

The incident has sparked concern among students, parents, and community members, especially as it occurred during a celebratory event. Many are calling for improved safety protocols at public gatherings, particularly those involving large groups of young people. The police have assured the public that they are taking the matter seriously and will release updates as the investigation progresses.

This tragic event serves as a stark reminder of the importance of crowd control and safety measures during large gatherings. As the investigation continues, the focus remains on uncovering the truth and preventing similar incidents in the future.
