30 Suspects Arrested in Abia as Police Raid and Destroy Criminal Hideouts

Abia State Police Command has intensified its crackdown on criminal activities across the state, arresting 31 suspects and recovering illicit drugs during recent raids and clearance operations. The operations, conducted in Mission Hill/New Road axis—commonly known as “Down Below”—and Amuzukwu area, resulted in the destruction of eight criminal hideouts and makeshift camps used for drug bunkering. According to the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Maureen Chinaka, the arrests included 30 male suspects and one female gang member, all of whom have been charged to court and remanded in custody.

The raids were carried out following sustained intelligence gathering, with the police targeting known criminal enclaves. On July 1, 2026, officers revisited the same areas and identified several huts and temporary camps being used as safe havens for criminals to conceal and sell illegal substances. These camps were systematically dismantled and set ablaze to prevent further criminal use. DSP Chinaka emphasized that the operations were part of the Command’s broader strategy to take the fight directly to criminals’ strongholds, in line with directives from Commissioner of Police Danladi Isa.

The recovered substances were suspected to be illicit hard drugs, though further forensic analysis is ongoing. The police have reiterated their zero-tolerance policy toward crime and criminality, underscoring their commitment to maintaining law and order in Abia State. CP Isa reaffirmed the Command’s dedication to fulfilling its constitutional duties and ensuring public safety through proactive and intelligence-driven operations.

These recent actions come amid growing concerns over rising crime rates and drug-related activities in urban and peri-urban areas of the state. The police’s aggressive approach aims to disrupt criminal networks and deter potential offenders. The destruction of the camps sends a clear message that no area will be left untouched in the fight against crime. Authorities are also urging residents to report suspicious activities to aid in further crackdowns.

The operation highlights the increasing collaboration between intelligence units and field officers in identifying and neutralizing criminal hotspots. With the suspects now in custody and the hideouts destroyed, the police hope to reduce the incidence of drug trafficking and violent crimes in the affected communities. The Command remains vigilant and continues to deploy resources to monitor and secure vulnerable areas. This sustained effort reflects a broader national push to combat organized crime and restore public confidence in security institutions.
