A Fulani herdsman, Yahaya Sulaiman, has been abducted in Ijebu-Jesa, Oriade Local Government Area of Osun State, in a targeted attack that has raised alarm among security agencies and local communities. The incident occurred around 9:00 pm on Monday, May 4, 2026, along the Iloko/Ijebu-Jesa Road, according to a security source who spoke on condition of anonymity. The abductors, armed and well-coordinated, reportedly asked a resident for Sulaiman’s whereabouts before carrying out the kidnapping, indicating prior knowledge of their target.
The Osun State Police Command confirmed the abduction through its Police Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Ojelabi, who stated that security operatives have launched a full investigation into the matter. Ojelabi emphasized that the victim was specifically targeted, noting that the gunmen did not randomly select a person but sought out Sulaiman with precision. “They enquired about the victim’s whereabouts from a resident before carrying out the abduction,” he said, adding that the police responded immediately upon receiving the report.
According to the police spokesperson, although the investigation is ongoing, Sulaiman’s family has not yet reported to the anti-kidnapping authorities. However, the command remains committed to doing everything possible to ensure the herdsman’s safe return. “We are doing what we can pending when the family will come forward,” Ojelabi said, urging members of the public to provide any information that could assist in the rescue operation.
Local sources revealed that Sulaiman is a prominent figure among Fulani herders in the area, known for rearing cattle. The abductors have reportedly contacted his family and placed a ransom demand of N70 million for his release. This development has heightened concerns over rising insecurity in the region, particularly targeting vulnerable groups such as herders.
The incident underscores the growing threat of armed banditry and kidnapping in parts of Osun State, especially along rural roads where security presence is often limited. Authorities are now working to trace the movement of the abductors and identify possible hideouts. The case also highlights the need for stronger community-police collaboration to prevent such attacks and ensure swift responses.
As the investigation continues, residents in Ijebu-Jesa and surrounding areas are on high alert, with many calling for increased patrols and better protection for vulnerable communities. The abduction of Yahaya Sulaiman is a stark reminder of the persistent insecurity challenges facing Nigeria, particularly in regions where cattle herding and farming communities coexist under tense conditions. The outcome of this case will likely influence how security agencies respond to similar incidents in the future.
