CAF Chief Reveals Reason Behind Wafcon Delay, Confirms Host Nation

The 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) has been officially rescheduled to take place from July 25 to August 16, 2026, with Morocco confirmed as the host nation, according to the Confederation of African Football (CAF). Acting Secretary-General Samson Adamu made the announcement during an appearance on SuperSport’s Soccer Africa, clarifying that the original March 17 start date was moved to ensure the tournament meets the highest standards. The decision follows the successful staging of the men’s Africa Cup of Nations and aims to provide optimal conditions for participating teams, especially given the competition’s role as a qualifier for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Adamu expressed regret over the delay, acknowledging that external factors beyond CAF’s control made the initial schedule unfeasible. He emphasized that the organization’s top priority is to deliver a well-structured and competitive event that reflects the importance of women’s football on the continent. “It was very important that the Women’s AFCON is organised under the right and perfect conditions for the women,” he said, highlighting the tournament’s significance as a pathway to the global stage.

Preparations for the event are already in motion, with CAF conducting inspection visits and coordinating with local organizers in Morocco. Adamu noted that despite the postponement, the tournament will proceed as planned and is expected to be a “very good and special competition.” He described the delay as a necessary sacrifice for long-term success, stating, “Sometimes little discomfort for the greater good is exactly what we did.”

The rescheduling has ended speculation about the hosting rights, which had earlier sparked controversy involving South Africa. Morocco remains firmly in charge of hosting duties, a role they previously fulfilled for the 2022 edition. That tournament saw Nigeria’s Super Falcons clinch their record-extending 10th WAFCON title, cementing their status as continental champions. As defending champions, Nigeria will aim to secure an 11th title and also qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

With preparations underway and the new dates confirmed, the 2026 WAFCON is poised to be a landmark event for women’s football in Africa. The tournament’s success could further elevate the sport’s profile across the continent and inspire future generations of female players.
