Benue State Police Command has arrested five Pakistani nationals and recovered 35 mobile phones during intelligence-driven operations in Otukpo and Ugbokolo, marking a significant security intervention in the state. The arrests took place on August 4 and 5, 2026, following credible tips from members of the public. The suspects were apprehended while attempting to move through rural areas under suspicious circumstances, raising concerns about potential illicit activities disguised as legitimate trade.
On August 4, three Pakistani men—Younas Mohammad (36), Ahmad Nunil (38), and Aslam Muhammad (46)—were intercepted at Adoka Motor Park in Otukpo Local Government Area. They were caught trying to board a vehicle heading to Adoka village. According to DSP Orchia Peter Aondongu, the police spokesperson, the suspects claimed they had come to Otukpo to market cosmetics and mobile devices. However, no such goods were found in their possession, making their statements inconsistent and highly suspicious.
The police noted that the lack of evidence supporting their claims prompted further scrutiny. Aondongu emphasized that their movements and explanations raised red flags, requiring deeper investigation into their purpose in the area. The command stressed that these actions were part of ongoing efforts to monitor and prevent criminal activities in vulnerable communities.
Two days later, on August 5, another operation led to the arrest of two more Pakistani nationals—Juma Sharif (30) and Muhammed Sharif (25)—at a hotel in Ugbokolo. The duo claimed to be involved in the sale of Android smartphones. During a search of their belongings, officers discovered eleven Tecno Camon 50 Pro phones. Further investigations and operational follow-up revealed an additional 24 mobile phones, including 23 Tecno Camon 50 Pro devices and one Infinix Hot 60, bringing the total recovered to 35.
All five suspects have been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Makurdi for detailed interrogation. Authorities are currently probing the circumstances surrounding their presence in Benue, their movements across the state, and whether the phones were being used to conceal other illegal activities, particularly in remote rural areas.
Commissioner of Police, Cletus Nwadiogbu, commended the officers involved in the operations and expressed gratitude to the public for providing vital information that aided the arrests. He urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious individuals or activities to security agencies promptly. Nwadiogbu reaffirmed the command’s commitment to working with stakeholders and the public to ensure peace and security across Benue State.
