Nigerian winger Zadok Yohanna has been withheld by Swedish club AIK from joining the Super Eagles for the upcoming 2026 Unity Cup in London, a decision that has disrupted head coach Eric Chelle’s preparations for the four-nation tournament. The 18-year-old, who has been identified as one of Nigeria’s most promising young talents playing abroad, was set to feature in the competition scheduled from May 26 to May 30 at The Valley stadium in London. Nigeria will face Jamaica, Zimbabwe, and India in the event, which serves as a key platform for Chelle to evaluate emerging and fringe players ahead of future international campaigns.
AIK officially announced their decision not to release Yohanna, citing both medical and sporting reasons. The club stated that the winger is currently in the final stages of rehabilitation from an injury, and they believe it is essential to prioritize his recovery. Additionally, AIK emphasized that Yohanna remains a vital player for their squad during a critical phase of the Swedish Allsvenskan season. The club’s official statement acknowledged Yohanna’s selection for the national team as a proud moment, but explained that his absence was necessary for long-term development and team stability.
In their statement, AIK said: “AIK Football is proud of Zadok Yohanna who has been selected for the Nigerian national team for their participation in the Unity Cup in London. However, Zadok is in an important final stage of his rehabilitation and the club has therefore decided not to release him on national team duty this time.” The club further clarified that the decision was not only based on medical grounds but also on Yohanna’s importance to AIK’s current campaign. They stressed that despite his young age, he plays a significant role in their team structure.
Although Yohanna will miss this opportunity, AIK expressed optimism about his future with the Super Eagles. “We look forward to seeing Zadok represent the Nigerian national team in the future,” the club said, signaling continued support for his international career. His absence is a setback for Nigeria, especially as he continues to gain recognition for his performances in Sweden. However, the decision appears to be a precautionary measure, with AIK prioritizing his fitness and club commitments over immediate international exposure.
The Unity Cup remains a crucial event for Nigeria’s football development, offering a chance to test new talent under competitive conditions. While Yohanna’s exclusion is notable, the national team will proceed with other available players. The focus now shifts to how Chelle will adjust his squad and whether other young talents can step up in his absence. The tournament will still serve as an important benchmark for Nigeria’s footballing future, even without one of its brightest emerging stars.
