Adeleke’s Re-Election Bid in Jeopardy as Court Rules on Deregistration

Adelekes Re-Election Bid in Jeopardy as Court Rules on Deregistration

The Osun State All Progressives Congress (APC) Governorship Campaign Council has raised serious concerns over the Federal High Court’s judgment derecognising the Accord Party, stating it casts doubt on Governor Ademola Adeleke’s eligibility to contest the August 15, 2026 governorship election. The council, in a statement issued on Tuesday by its Media and Publicity Head, Oluremi Omowaiye, confirmed it had noted the court’s decision and the directive to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to comply with the ruling. The APC emphasized its respect for judicial authority and constitutional democracy, but warned that the judgment has significant implications for Adeleke’s re-election bid under the Accord Party banner.

The statement declared that unless the Federal High Court’s decision is overturned by a higher court, Governor Adeleke will not be allowed to run for re-election under the Accord Party. The council further highlighted that the legal setback could also affect other candidates sponsored by the party for state and national legislative positions. It described the development as a major blow to Adeleke’s political future, especially given the ongoing legal disputes over the national leadership of the Accord Party. The APC pointed out that if courts eventually recognize an opposing faction as the legitimate leadership, INEC may not accept Adeleke as the party’s validly nominated candidate.

The campaign council noted that the crisis over the authentic leadership of the Accord Party remains unresolved and that Adeleke’s political challenges stem from legal issues that existed before he joined the party. The APC also argued that Adeleke’s potential disqualification from the ballot would deprive voters of the chance to evaluate his administration during the election. The council accused the current government of mismanaging public resources and creating economic hardship, particularly in education, health, and employment sectors.

The APC cited specific projects and financial transactions under scrutiny, including the N99.5 billion Ede Airport project, the alleged diversion of a N2 billion federal grant for buses, payments to ghost workers, and questionable management of public revenue. The statement stressed that accountability will remain a critical issue regardless of the election outcome. “Even if Governor Adeleke escapes the verdict of the electorate because he is disqualified from the race, he cannot escape the long arm of justice and the inevitable demand for accountability,” the council stated.

In closing, the APC urged Osun State residents to remain peaceful, vigilant, and committed to democratic principles as they prepare for the August 15 governorship election. The party’s stance underscores the growing legal and political complexities surrounding the upcoming election, which may reshape the political landscape in Osun State.
