A Lagos State University graduate is fighting for his life after being struck by a stray bullet during an attempted robbery in Igando, Lagos State. The incident occurred on Sunday along Kayode Onafuye Street in the Alhaji Ede area, when suspected armed robbers targeted a Point of Sale operator. Four men, arriving on two motorcycles, stormed a bungalow after allegedly trailing the PoS operator to her residence. They failed to gain entry as occupants locked the doors, leading the assailants to open fire indiscriminately.
Eyewitnesses described how the robbers first went to the operator’s nearby shop before moving to her house, calling out for her while trying to force their way in. When they were blocked from entering, frustration set in and gunfire erupted. One resident, identified only as Bode, recounted that the suspects had been tracking the PoS operator and became violent upon being denied access. “They started shooting wildly after realizing they couldn’t get in,” he said.
Another resident, who spoke anonymously due to security concerns, revealed that the victim was walking along the street unaware of the danger. He was hit by a stray bullet just as the gunmen began firing. “He didn’t know what was happening until the shots rang out,” the witness added. After the attackers fled, neighbors rushed to help and took the injured man to a nearby general hospital.
The victim, a recent LASU graduate, was reportedly preparing to begin his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme. His condition remains critical as medical personnel work to stabilize him. Police responded swiftly to the scene after the incident was reported. A police source confirmed that officers recovered spent bullet shells near the house where the attack took place.
When contacted on Tuesday, CSP Abimbola Adebisi, spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, stated she had not yet been briefed on the case but promised to verify details. “The report has not gotten to me. I’ll check and revert,” she said. As of now, no official update has been released by the police command.
This tragic incident highlights the growing insecurity in urban areas of Lagos, particularly in neighborhoods like Igando, where armed robberies continue to threaten lives. The case underscores the need for stronger community policing and rapid response systems to prevent such senseless violence.
