ADC Nominates Former APC Aspirant to Challenge Ndume in Borno Election

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has officially selected Idris Gatumbwa Mamman Durkwa as its consensus candidate for the Borno South Senatorial District in the 2027 general elections. Durkwa, a former All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship aspirant, was chosen following a screening process that also evaluated other potential candidates. The decision marks a strategic move by the ADC to strengthen its presence in southern Borno, a region with significant political and electoral influence. The seat is currently held by Senator Ali Ndume, who has already secured the APC nomination to seek a fifth term in office.

Durkwa’s selection comes amid growing political activity as parties across Nigeria begin preparing for the 2027 elections. His appointment is seen as a bid to challenge the dominance of the APC in the senatorial district. Senator Ndume, known for his vocal stance on national issues, has been a prominent figure in Borno politics for years. If elected, Durkwa would succeed him, bringing a new voice to the upper chamber of Nigeria’s National Assembly.

In addition to Durkwa, the ADC screened two other senatorial candidates: Fugu Ibrahim for Borno North and Babagana Zanna for Borno Central. These screenings reflect the party’s broader efforts to field competitive candidates across the state. ADC Organising Secretary Mohammed Umar Bolori confirmed Durkwa’s selection, stating that he emerged as the consensus choice after careful evaluation. “He was presented to reposition ADC’s unity, growth, and electoral success in southern Borno, the state and beyond,” Bolori told journalists.

The party also conducted screenings for governorship and House of Representatives candidates in areas where consensus was not achieved. This indicates that the ADC is actively building a comprehensive slate of candidates to contest across various electoral tiers. The process underscores the party’s commitment to inclusive and transparent candidate selection, aiming to enhance its electoral appeal and organizational strength.

As Nigeria moves closer to the 2027 elections, political parties are intensifying their preparations. The ADC’s choice of Durkwa signals a focused effort to expand its footprint in Borno, a state with complex political dynamics and strategic importance. With the APC’s strong presence and Senator Ndume’s experience, the upcoming contest is expected to be competitive. Durkwa’s background as a former APC aspirant may also bring unique insights and networks to his campaign.

The ADC’s strategy in Borno could influence the broader political landscape in the Northeast. As the party consolidates its candidates, it aims to position itself as a credible alternative to dominant parties. The 2027 elections will be a critical test for the ADC’s organizational capacity and voter appeal. Durkwa’s candidacy represents a step forward in the party’s ambition to play a more prominent role in national politics.
