The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has criticized President Bola Tinubu for his recent statement that he is ready to “fight to the finish” politically, urging him instead to direct that energy toward combating terrorism, banditry, and kidnapping across Nigeria. The opposition party made the call in a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, following a series of violent attacks that have left dozens dead and communities in ruins. The ADC emphasized that Nigerians are not seeking political battles, but decisive leadership in the face of worsening insecurity.
The party’s criticism came after President Tinubu’s remarks during a meeting with members of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. The timing of the comment was particularly sensitive, as it followed a deadly attack in Naridon village, located in Kauru Local Government Area of Kaduna State, where at least 30 people were killed by gunmen. The attack also resulted in the destruction of homes and the displacement of families, adding to the growing list of tragedies linked to armed violence in the country.
According to the ADC, the President’s focus should be on protecting citizens and restoring peace, not on political confrontations with opposition parties. “Nigerians did not elect a Commander-in-Chief to become the nation’s chief issuer of condolence statements,” the party stated, highlighting the disconnect between leadership and public expectations. The ADC stressed that the real fight Nigerians elected Tinubu to lead is against armed criminals, not political opponents.
