One soldier has been killed and another injured in an ambush by suspected terrorists targeting troops of the 34 Artillery Brigade in Ohaji/Egbema Local Government Area of Imo State. The attack occurred on May 4 along the SPDC–Etekuru road, where soldiers had been deployed to investigate a burnt Hilux vehicle. Security analyst Zagazola Makama confirmed the incident in a post on his X platform on Tuesday, citing sources within the security sector.
The ambush unfolded at approximately 12:53 p.m. as the military personnel arrived at the scene. Upon their arrival, they were immediately subjected to heavy gunfire from the attackers, sparking a fierce exchange of fire. The assailants, believed to be members of a terrorist group, managed to inflict casualties before retreating under the cover of reinforcements that arrived shortly after.
In the aftermath, one soldier was confirmed dead, while another sustained injuries and was rushed to a medical facility for treatment. The attackers also made off with two AK-47 rifles and partially damaged a military vehicle during the assault. Security forces responded swiftly, deploying reinforcements to secure the area and drive the attackers away.
Further investigation at the scene revealed two burnt vehicles and the bodies of two individuals. The remains were later evacuated to a hospital morgue for forensic examination and identification. Authorities have not yet confirmed the identities of the deceased or the motives behind the attack, but the incident is being treated as a deliberate act of violence against military personnel.
The ambush highlights the ongoing security challenges in the southeastern region, particularly in areas near the border with Abia State, where armed groups have been increasingly active. The military has intensified patrols and surveillance in the area to prevent further attacks and ensure the safety of civilians and security personnel.
This incident adds to a growing list of security breaches in Imo State, raising concerns about the effectiveness of current counter-terrorism strategies. The Nigerian military has vowed to bring the perpetrators to justice and restore peace in the region. As investigations continue, residents are being urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the nearest security outpost. The attack underscores the need for sustained efforts to combat terrorism and protect national security.
