The Social Democratic Party (SDP) North-West Zonal Congress has elected a new set of zonal officials, with Hon. Salihu Suleiman of Kaduna State emerging as the National Vice Chairman for the zone. The election took place during a congress held at the party’s state secretariat in Kaduna on Monday, with all contested positions filled unopposed. The results were announced in a statement jointly issued by Adamu Idris, chairman of the electoral committee, and Titus Madaki, the secretary.
The electoral committee emphasized that the peaceful and uncontested nature of the election reflects the party’s commitment to internal democracy and unity. Adamu Idris urged the newly elected officials to promote inclusiveness in party governance, ensuring that all members are involved in decision-making processes. He stressed the importance of maintaining internal cohesion and strengthening democratic structures within the SDP to remain competitive in upcoming elections.
Hon. Salihu Suleiman, speaking on behalf of the newly elected leadership, expressed confidence in the party’s ability to grow stronger under their stewardship. He highlighted that the primary focus would be on building a robust opposition movement across the North-West zone, with an emphasis on improving electoral performance. Suleiman noted that the party’s success in future elections depends on unity, grassroots mobilization, and effective leadership.
In addition to Suleiman, other key positions were filled by experienced party members from across the zone. Rilwanu Jamo of Katsina State was elected Zonal Secretary, while Hassan Gidan Laka of Sokoto State became Zonal Treasurer. Comrade Musa Lawan from Katsina was appointed Zonal Publicity Secretary, and Comrade Inuwa Idris of Kaduna was chosen as Zonal Financial Secretary.
The new leadership also includes Bishop Alex Baidi as Zonal Organising Secretary, Dr. Aminu Sagagi as Welfare Secretary, Garba Namodori as Auditor, Ummi Kabir as Women Leader, and Murtala Jangebe as Youth Leader. These appointments reflect a deliberate effort to ensure representation from different states and sectors within the party.
The election of these officials marks a significant step in the SDP’s efforts to reorganize and reposition itself ahead of future political contests. With a clear leadership structure in place, the party aims to consolidate its presence in the North-West and contribute meaningfully to Nigeria’s democratic landscape. The new zonal leadership is expected to work closely with state chapters to strengthen party activities and increase voter engagement in the region.
