Troops Arrest Four Suspected Illegal Miners, Recover Equipment in Nasarawa State

Troops of Operation MESA have arrested four suspected illegal miners and recovered several mining equipment during a raid on an illegal mining site in Karu Local Government Area of Nasarawa State. The operation, conducted on Monday afternoon, was carried out by soldiers from the 177 Guards Battalion stationed at Forward Operating Base (FOB) Tattara. The raid followed credible intelligence about illegal mining activities at Saniyan Gitata, a location within Karu LGA. Security analyst Zagazola Makama confirmed the development in a post shared on X on Tuesday.

The military operation began at approximately 3:00 p.m. on Monday, with troops swiftly storming the mining site. Upon arrival, they apprehended four individuals allegedly engaged in unlawful mining operations. The suspects were taken into custody along with the mining tools and equipment seized during the raid. The military’s swift response underscores ongoing efforts to combat illegal mining, which has become a major security and environmental concern in parts of northern Nigeria.

Among the items recovered were an industrial generator, three motorcycles, six shovels, three digging tools, 17 rubber basins, seven jerrycans, two mobile phones, and an electric cable. These tools are believed to have been used to support the illegal extraction of minerals, likely gold, which is common in the region. The seizure of such equipment highlights the scale and organization of illegal mining activities in the area.

Zagazola Makama stated that the suspects and the recovered items are currently in military custody. Investigations are ongoing to determine the full extent of their involvement and to identify any potential accomplices. Once the investigation is complete, the suspects are expected to face legal action in accordance with Nigerian laws. This operation is part of a broader campaign by the military to secure critical mineral zones and prevent the exploitation of natural resources by criminal networks.

Illegal mining in Nasarawa State has previously led to environmental degradation, violent clashes, and the displacement of local communities. The military’s continued presence in areas like Karu LGA aims to restore order and protect both the environment and the rights of legitimate landowners. The success of this raid sends a strong message to those involved in illicit mining that such activities will not be tolerated.

As the investigation proceeds, authorities are expected to release further details on the suspects’ identities and the possible connections to larger criminal networks. This incident also reinforces the importance of intelligence-driven operations in combating illegal activities in remote and vulnerable regions. The military’s actions in Karu LGA are likely to be followed by increased patrols and community engagement to prevent future occurrences.
