The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has officially zoned its presidential ticket to the southern region of Nigeria ahead of its upcoming primaries, according to Buba Galadima, a prominent party figure and close ally of former Kano State governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso. Galadima made the announcement during an interview on Channels Television, confirming that the party is finalizing preparations for the submission of its updated membership register. The register is expected to be submitted between Tuesday, May 5, and Wednesday, May 6, 2025, marking a key step in the party’s internal electoral process.
Galadima emphasized that once the membership register is submitted, the NDC will be fully positioned to begin its primaries without delay. He stressed that the party is committed to adhering to all legal and procedural requirements to ensure a smooth and timely process. “The NDC will submit its register either on the 5th or 6th of this month. Once that is done, we are good to go,” he stated clearly, underscoring the party’s readiness.
On the issue of zoning, Galadima left no room for ambiguity, declaring, “No missing words, we have zoned it to the South.” This decision means that any candidate aspiring to represent the NDC in the 2027 presidential election must be from the southern part of Nigeria. He urged interested southerners to register quickly to position themselves for the nomination process. The zoning decision reflects the party’s strategic effort to ensure regional balance and inclusivity in its leadership selection.
Internal preparations within the NDC are already underway to meet statutory deadlines and avoid any disruptions in the party’s political calendar. Galadima highlighted that the party is working diligently to ensure transparency and fairness throughout the process. The move to zone the presidential ticket to the South is seen as a deliberate step to broaden the party’s appeal and strengthen its presence in the region.
With the submission of the membership register imminent, the NDC is positioning itself as a serious contender in the upcoming presidential race. The party’s leadership is focused on building momentum and mobilizing support across the South, laying the groundwork for a competitive campaign. As Nigeria moves closer to the 2027 general elections, the NDC’s zoning decision could influence political dynamics and voter expectations across the country.
