BREAKING: Suspected Herdsmen Attack Benue Community, Prompting Mass Exodus of Residents

Residents of Ondo community in Ugboju, Otukpo Local Government Area of Benue State, were forced to flee their homes on Tuesday morning following a fresh attack by suspected armed herdsmen. The assailants stormed the village in the early hours of the day, opening fire and causing widespread panic. Many families abandoned their homes in search of safety, with reports indicating the attack was still ongoing at the time of reporting. The incident marks another violent escalation in a region already reeling from recent insecurity.

Hon. Jimmy Nart, a Labour Party candidate for the 2027 House of Assembly elections and a native of the community, confirmed the attack through a message he shared. He wrote: “I just received information from my family that Fulani terrorists are currently attacking Ondo, Ugboju. Protect yourself.” His statement underscores the immediacy and danger faced by residents. The community remains in a state of high alert, with no immediate sign of the attackers retreating.

This latest violence follows a deadly attack just 48 hours earlier in Otukpo-Nobi, also within Otukpo LGA, where over 18 people were reportedly killed. The pattern of attacks has raised alarm among residents and civil society groups, who are calling for urgent government intervention. The repeated incursions have disrupted daily life, displaced families, and heightened fear across the region.

As of the time of filing, there was no official confirmation from the Benue State Police Command regarding the attack on Ondo. Efforts to reach the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Udeme Edet, for comment were unsuccessful. Calls and text messages sent to him remained unanswered, leaving residents and media outlets without official updates or reassurance.

The situation remains tense, with many families continuing to flee the area. Some have sought refuge in nearby towns and villages, while others have moved to internally displaced persons’ camps. The lack of security presence in the region has fueled concerns about the government’s ability to protect its citizens. Residents are increasingly frustrated by the perceived inaction and lack of response from security agencies.

The recurring attacks by suspected armed herdsmen have become a major security challenge in Benue State, with communities living in constant fear. The attacks often occur during the early hours, catching residents off guard and making escape difficult. In many cases, homes are burned, livestock stolen, and lives lost. The government has been urged to deploy more troops and improve intelligence gathering to prevent future attacks.

This latest incident in Ondo adds to the growing list of violent episodes in the region, highlighting the urgent need for lasting solutions to the crisis. As communities remain on edge, the hope is that authorities will act swiftly to restore peace and protect lives. The situation in Benue State continues to demand national attention and coordinated security efforts.
