Nigerian Army troops, in coordination with the Department of State Services (DSS), have arrested a suspected explosives-making expert allegedly linked to the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), in Abia State. The arrest took place on July 12 at approximately 3:50 a.m. in Ummuene community, located in Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area. Security sources confirmed the operation was intelligence-driven and executed by personnel from the Headquarters, 14 Brigade, alongside DSS operatives from Abia and Enugu State Commands.
The suspect, described as a key explosives specialist for the IPOB/ESN network, was apprehended after troops stormed his hideout based on credible intelligence. During the raid, security agents recovered two mobile phones believed to be used for coordinating activities related to the separatist group. These items, along with the suspect, were handed over to the DSS Abia State Command for further investigation and legal proceedings.
Security analyst Zagazola Makama disclosed the development through a post on his official X handle, citing reliable sources within the security architecture. He emphasized that the operation reflects the ongoing efforts by Nigerian security agencies to dismantle extremist and criminal networks operating in the South-East region. The arrest is seen as a significant step in the broader strategy to neutralize threats to national security and restore peace in the area.
The operation underscores the increasing collaboration between the Nigerian Army and the DSS in addressing security challenges in the region. Authorities have consistently stressed the importance of intelligence-led operations to preempt attacks and dismantle underground networks. This latest development follows a series of similar raids across the South-East aimed at disrupting the logistics and communication channels of IPOB and ESN.
The suspect’s arrest is expected to provide valuable insights into the operational structure and tactics of the separatist group, particularly concerning the procurement and manufacturing of explosives. Security sources indicated that the investigation will continue to uncover any accomplices or networks linked to the suspect. The DSS has assured the public that all necessary legal actions will be taken to bring those responsible to justice.
As the security situation in the South-East remains a priority for the federal government, this arrest reinforces the commitment of security agencies to uphold national unity and protect lives and property. The operation also serves as a warning to others involved in subversive activities. The continued dismantling of such networks is expected to contribute to long-term stability in the region.
