Six Nigerians Released After Months in Ivorian Prison

Six Nigerians detained in the Republic of Côte d’Ivoire since October 2025 over alleged economic crimes have been released following persistent diplomatic and consular efforts by the Nigerian government. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed the development in a statement on Friday, June 26, 2026, revealing that four of the detainees were freed on Monday, June 22, 2026, while the remaining two regained their freedom the following day, Tuesday, June 23, 2026. The release marks a significant diplomatic success for Nigeria, underscoring the government’s commitment to protecting its citizens abroad.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs attributed the successful outcome to sustained engagement by the Nigerian Embassy in Abidjan with Ivorian authorities. The embassy maintained consistent communication with the Ivorian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Justice, and other relevant institutions throughout the detention period. Consular access was ensured for all six Nigerians, and their welfare was closely monitored, reflecting the embassy’s dedication to their rights and dignity.

Ambassador Nwabiola C. Ezenwa, Nigeria’s envoy to Côte d’Ivoire, and the embassy staff were commended for their professionalism, resilience, and tireless diplomatic work. The ministry highlighted that their efforts were instrumental in securing the release and resolving the matter amicably. “The Embassy maintained regular consular access to the detained Nigerians, ensured their welfare throughout their detention, and engaged consistently with the Ivorian authorities to secure their release,” the statement noted.

The Nigerian government also expressed gratitude to the Government of Côte d’Ivoire for its cooperation, emphasizing that the positive outcome was made possible by the strong bilateral relations between the two countries. These ties, built on mutual respect, friendship, and regional solidarity, played a crucial role in facilitating the resolution. The ministry reaffirmed Nigeria’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding the rights and dignity of its citizens overseas.

Through its diplomatic missions worldwide, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will continue to provide consular assistance and engage host governments through established channels. Nigerians abroad are urged to abide by the laws of their host countries and maintain regular contact with the nearest Nigerian diplomatic or consular mission to ensure timely support when needed. The release of these six citizens serves as a reminder of the government’s active role in protecting Nigerian interests abroad and reinforces confidence in the country’s diplomatic capabilities.
