Eid el Kabir: Police Arrest Suspected Criminals, Recover Firearms in Nasarawa State

Nasarawa State Police Command has intensified security operations across the state during the Eid-el-Kabir celebrations, resulting in the arrest of multiple suspects and the recovery of firearms, ammunition, and other dangerous weapons. The operations, launched to ensure a peaceful and crime-free Sallah, have yielded significant results, with police apprehending individuals linked to violent crime and unlawful societies. Authorities say these actions are part of proactive measures to maintain public safety during the festive period.

On May 27, 2026, at approximately 4:30 p.m., officers from the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) conducted an intensive patrol in Ombi I, Lafia, where they intercepted three suspects—Julius Ishaya, 25; Shuaibu Nuhu, 24; and David Usman, 26—all residents of Transformer Street, Ombi I. The men were stopped while carrying a small handbag and failed to provide satisfactory explanations for their movements. A thorough search led to the recovery of one fabricated Beretta pistol, one live 9mm round, four Android phones, criminal charms, and a Bajaj motorcycle. The suspects were taken into custody, and investigations are ongoing to determine their involvement in other criminal activities and to uncover any wider network.

Later that same day, at 7:07 p.m., police from the Metro Area Command in Lafia responded to a distress call from a resident in Bukan Kwato. The call reported the movement of suspected members of an unlawful society, allegedly returning from a meeting in Lafia and heading towards Mararaba Akunza via the New Bypass. Officers swiftly intercepted three suspects—Abubakar Ibrahim, 17; Walid Mohammed, 14; and Zubairu Ibrahim, all from Mararaba Akunza. Items seized included a locally made pistol, an axe, and a red beret, which police believe is linked to cult-related activities.

Commissioner of Police in Nasarawa State, CP Shetima Jauro Mohammed, praised the officers for their professionalism and swift response to security threats. He emphasized the command’s unwavering commitment to protecting lives and property during the Eid-el-Kabir celebrations. “The Command remains unwavering in its resolve to safeguard lives and property throughout the festive period,” he stated. He also issued a stern warning to criminal elements and members of unlawful groups, urging them to desist from criminal activities or face the full force of the law.

CP Mohammed encouraged residents to remain vigilant and to support security agencies by providing timely and credible information. He assured the public that the suspects would be charged in court once investigations are completed. The police’s continued operations reflect a broader effort to maintain peace and security in Nasarawa State, especially during sensitive periods like religious festivals. As the state moves forward, the police remain focused on deterring crime and ensuring public confidence in law enforcement.
