Police in Katsina State have successfully rescued 11 passengers who were kidnapped by armed bandits along the Sheme-Kankara Road in Kankara Local Government Area, marking a significant operation against rising insecurity in the region. The incident occurred on the night of May 18, 2026, when the suspects ambushed a Toyota Hiace bus carrying the victims as they traveled to Kano. The attackers stopped the vehicle at Kakumi Village, forcibly taking the passengers into custody before fleeing into the surrounding bush.
The Katsina State Police Command swiftly responded to a distress call from the victims, deploying officers to the scene. Upon arrival, the police engaged the kidnappers in a brief but intense gun battle, which led to the safe rescue of all 11 passengers. Police spokesman Abubakar Sadiq confirmed that the victims were unharmed and were immediately taken to safety. He added that intensive bush combing operations are ongoing to locate and apprehend the fleeing suspects.
In a separate but related operation on the same evening, police also recovered 25 cows stolen by suspected bandits in Badawa Village, located in Malumfashi Local Government Area. Patrol teams intercepted the suspects along their escape route, leading to another gunfight. The suspects abandoned the stolen livestock during the confrontation, allowing police to recover the animals intact.
The recovered cows were later returned to their rightful owners, providing a measure of relief to the affected community. The successful recovery of both the kidnapped passengers and stolen property highlights the increasing effectiveness of police operations in combating banditry and rural insecurity in Katsina State.
Katsina Commissioner of Police, Ali Umar Fage, commended the officers for their bravery and swift response. He emphasized that the command remains committed to protecting lives and property across the state. Fage assured residents that security operations will continue without letup, with a focus on dismantling criminal networks operating in remote areas.
These coordinated efforts reflect a broader strategy by the state police to restore peace and confidence among citizens. As insecurity remains a pressing concern in northern Nigeria, such operations are crucial in demonstrating the government’s resolve to tackle crime. The rescue of the 11 passengers and recovery of the stolen cows serve as a reminder that law enforcement is actively working to curb violence and protect communities. The continued vigilance of security agencies will be key in ensuring long-term stability in Katsina and beyond.
