Yobe State Security Council has issued a strong warning to politicians against thuggery and brigandage as the 2027 general elections draw closer, with the State Commissioner of Police, Usman Kanfani Jibrin, emphasizing that no one will be above the law. The warning came during a media briefing in Damaturu following the State Security Council meeting held on Tuesday. CP Jibrin highlighted that two All Progressives Congress (APC) primary elections — for the House of Representatives and Senate — had already been conducted peacefully, underscoring the importance of maintaining that calm. He stressed that Yobe State, being a frontline state in the northeast, cannot afford any acts that could escalate into widespread lawlessness.
The Commissioner reiterated that security agencies are fully prepared to act decisively against any form of political violence. “Thuggery and brigandage will not be tolerated from anyone,” he stated firmly. He reminded political actors that established legal and institutional mechanisms exist for addressing grievances, urging them to use these channels instead of resorting to intimidation or violence. The message was clear: peaceful elections are non-negotiable, and security forces will enforce order without exception.
In a related development, Brigadier General Dahiru Abdulsalam (retd), the Special Adviser to the Yobe State Governor on Security Matters, called on residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious individuals to security agencies. He made the appeal during the same media briefing, citing ongoing military operations against insurgents in the region. “Military aircraft have been flying across the entire state,” he noted, adding that these operations are aimed at disrupting insurgent activities and pushing them out of their strongholds.
General Abdulsalam warned that displaced insurgents are now infiltrating towns and villages, posing a serious security threat to civilians. He urged the public to be cautious and to immediately report any unfamiliar faces or unusual movements to the nearest security unit. “We must all play our part in safeguarding our communities,” he said, emphasizing the need for community cooperation in maintaining peace and security.
The combined warnings from the police and military leadership reflect a coordinated effort to ensure that Yobe State remains stable during the critical pre-election period. As political campaigns intensify, the state’s security architecture is being reinforced to prevent any breakdown in law and order. The message to both politicians and citizens is clear: security is a shared responsibility, and any attempt to undermine it will face swift consequences. The 2027 elections must be conducted in peace, and Yobe State is determined to uphold that principle.
