The All Progressives Congress (APC) has concluded its primary election for the Abia South senatorial district, with Erondu Uchenna Erondu Jnr., the lawmaker representing Obingwa-West in the Abia State House of Assembly, emerging as the party’s flagbearer after securing a decisive victory across all six local government areas in the district. Erondu Jnr. polled 16,640 votes, significantly outpacing his closest rival, Nyerere Anyim, who garnered 5,206 votes. Other candidates in the race included Paul Ikonne, who received 4,099 votes, and Blessing Nwagba, who scored 4,456 votes. The results were officially announced on Monday at the APC Abia South Senatorial District Primary Election Collation Centre in Aba by the collation officer, Prof. Emmanuel Kalu Agbaeze.
Erondu Jnr.’s victory was comprehensive, as he won in all six LGAs—Obingwa, Ugwunagbo, Aba North, Aba South, Ukwa West, and Ukwa East—demonstrating strong grassroots support across the senatorial zone. His performance in each local government area underscored his dominance in the primary contest and solidified his position as the APC’s chosen candidate for the 2023 general election. The peaceful conduct of the primary and the transparent collation process were noted by party officials and observers present at the venue.
With this win, Erondu Jnr. will now face the incumbent senator from the Labour Party (LP), Enyinnaya Abaribe, in the upcoming general election. Abaribe, who also hails from Obingwa LGA, has held the Abia South senatorial seat since 2011 and is expected to mount a strong re-election campaign. The contest between Erondu Jnr. and Abaribe is anticipated to be highly competitive, given the political significance of the Abia South senatorial district and the strong party loyalties in the region.
The APC’s primary election in Abia South was conducted under strict party guidelines, with security personnel deployed to ensure order and prevent disruptions. Party members from across the six LGAs participated in the voting process, which was monitored by both internal party agents and independent observers. The outcome reflects the APC’s internal dynamics and the level of support Erondu Jnr. has built within the party structure.
As the general election draws nearer, Erondu Jnr. is expected to intensify his campaign efforts to consolidate his lead and appeal to voters beyond his immediate base. His victory in the primary positions him as a key contender in the senatorial race, and his performance in the upcoming election will be closely watched by political analysts and party stakeholders alike. The Abia South senatorial race is now set for a high-stakes contest between two prominent figures from the same local government area, promising a vibrant and impactful political showdown.
