Police Recover Gun and Live Cartridges as Suspect Flees in Ogun

Ogun Police Command has recovered a single-barrel long gun and six live cartridges during a stop-and-search operation along the Ayetoro–Olodo Road axis, after a suspect fled the scene on an unregistered Bajaj Boxer motorcycle. The incident occurred as operatives from the Aiyetoro Area Command were conducting routine security checks in the area. The suspect, a male whose identity remains unknown, spotted the police from a distance and immediately attempted to escape. In a bid to evade arrest, he discarded the firearm and ammunition into a nearby bush before speeding away on his motorcycle.

Police Spokesperson DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi confirmed the recovery during a statement to DAILY POST on Tuesday. He noted that the weapons were swiftly retrieved and secured at the Command’s armoury for safekeeping and further forensic examination. Babaseyi emphasized that the suspect’s actions demonstrate a clear attempt to avoid law enforcement, underscoring the importance of vigilant patrols in curbing gun-related crimes in the state.

The Commissioner of Police for Ogun State, Bode Ojajuni, commended the officers for their alertness and swift response during the operation. He reiterated the Command’s zero-tolerance policy toward the illegal possession and use of firearms. Ojajuni assured residents that all necessary steps are being taken to track down and apprehend the suspect for prosecution. He also urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the nearest police station.

This incident highlights ongoing efforts by the Ogun Police Command to enhance security and combat armed criminality in the state. The recovery of the firearm and live cartridges is seen as a significant step in preventing potential violence and maintaining public safety. Authorities are currently reviewing surveillance footage and conducting door-to-door inquiries in the area to identify the suspect. The Command has also intensified patrols along key roads and highways to deter similar incidents.

The case is now under investigation, and police are working with intelligence units to trace the origin of the weapons and the suspect’s movements. Residents are encouraged to cooperate with law enforcement to help bring the suspect to justice. The recovery of the firearm serves as a reminder of the dangers posed by illegal weapons and the need for continued public awareness and cooperation. As security operations continue, the Ogun Police Command remains committed to ensuring peace and safety across the state.
