Woman Arrested in Benue Over Arson That Killed Lovers Two Daughters

A woman identified as Mbayegh has been arrested in connection with a deadly arson attack that claimed the lives of two teenage girls in the Kaffe area of Zaki-Biam, Ukum Local Government Area of Benue State. The incident, which occurred on Sunday night, has sparked shock and outrage in the community, with authorities confirming the suspect is now in police custody for interrogation. The girls, daughters of Aondoyima Ierkwagh, were asleep in a traditional round hut when the fire broke out, leading to their tragic deaths.

According to residents, Mbayegh visited the home of Aondoyima Ierkwagh, believed to be her lover, late on Sunday night. She was reportedly asked to leave the premises, but she refused, suspecting another woman was inside the house. This led to a heated argument, after which Aondoyima locked his two daughters inside the hut and left the compound. Witnesses allege that Mbayegh then set the hut on fire, believing the other woman was inside.

The two girls, who were asleep at the time, were unable to escape the flames. One of them died at the scene, while the second sustained severe burns and later succumbed to her injuries in hospital. The deceased were identified as the daughters of Aondoyima Ierkwagh, an indigene of Tsehe in Tongov, Katsina-Ala Local Government Area, who currently lives at his maternal home in Zaki-Biam. Their mother was reportedly away in Taraba State engaged in farming activities when the incident occurred.

The suspect attempted to flee after the fire but was intercepted by members of the Volunteer Guards near Tse-Dugwer village. She was then handed over to the police for further questioning. DSP Udeme Edet, spokesperson for the Benue State Police Command, confirmed the arrest and said investigations are ongoing to establish the full circumstances of the incident. He urged the public to remain calm and allow law enforcement to carry out their duties without interference.

The police have assured that anyone found responsible for the crime will face prosecution under the law. The tragic event has left the community in mourning and raised concerns about domestic violence and emotional conflicts escalating into fatal outcomes. As investigations continue, authorities are appealing for any additional information from the public to aid in the case. The incident serves as a grim reminder of the devastating consequences of unchecked anger and jealousy, and the urgent need for conflict resolution and mental health support in communities across Nigeria.
