Two Fatal Road Crashes in Kebbi Claim 23 Lives, Sparking Safety Concerns

At least 23 people have died in two separate road accidents in Kebbi State, sparking widespread grief across communities in Kebbi and Sokoto states. The tragedies occurred days apart, each claiming multiple lives and leaving families devastated. In the first incident, five youths from Ambursa, Birnin Kebbi, lost their lives when their vehicle crashed while en route to a friendly football match. The second accident, which happened along the Sokoto–Yauri Road, claimed 18 lives when a commercial bus returning from Lagos collided head-on with a trailer.

The Ambursa accident involved a Toyota Sienna carrying 18 youths. The vehicle lost control and somersaulted along Airport Road in Birnin Kebbi. Five occupants died instantly, while several others sustained injuries of varying severity. The victims were described as promising young men whose lives were cut short before they could fulfill their potential. The incident triggered deep sorrow in the community, with residents mourning the loss of their peers and neighbors.

In response, the Kebbi State Government sent a delegation led by the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Alhaji Abubakar Umar Dutsinmari, to Ambursa to convey Governor Nasir Idris’ condolences. Officials confirmed that the governor had been briefed on the accident and immediately ordered emergency medical assistance for the injured. The government’s swift response underscored the gravity of the incident and the need for improved road safety measures.

Just days later, another fatal crash occurred along the Sokoto–Yauri Road. An 18-seater commercial bus carrying passengers from Lagos to Sokoto collided with a trailer. Eighteen of the 20 occupants died at the scene, while two survivors were rushed to the hospital with serious injuries. Most of the victims had traveled to Lagos in search of employment and were returning home when the accident happened. The victims hailed from various communities across Sokoto State, including Shagari, Yabo, and Gada Local Government Areas.

Rescue efforts were launched in the early hours of Tuesday, with a member of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Bello Muhammad, confirming that the bus was completely destroyed by the impact. Rescue workers and local residents described the scene as horrifying, with several bodies severely mutilated. The tragic events have once again raised alarms about the state of road safety in Nigeria.

Road safety experts continue to emphasize the urgent need for stricter enforcement of traffic laws, regular vehicle inspections, and better road infrastructure to prevent such disasters. As families mourn and communities grieve, the call for action grows louder. These accidents serve as a stark reminder of the human cost of neglecting road safety, and the nation must act decisively to prevent future tragedies.
