The Niger State Police Command has arrested two men accused of impersonating military personnel and assaulting a laundry attendant in Suleja over a missing mobile phone. The suspects, identified as Abraham Ashiwel and Michael Okonkwo, were apprehended following an incident on August 8 at a laundry shop in Angwan-Gwari, Suleja. According to the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Wasiu Abiodun, the men stormed the shop and physically assaulted the attendant after claiming a phone was missing. The investigation was launched by operatives from ‘B’ Division, Suleja, who later arrested the suspects.
During interrogation, the suspects confessed to impersonating military personnel in the community for several years. They were found to have attended the Nigerian Military School in Zaria but were expelled in 2016 and 2019 respectively. This revelation raises concerns about the misuse of military identity and the potential threat posed by individuals without legitimate military affiliation. The police emphasized that such acts undermine public trust and national security.
Items recovered from the suspects include a military camouflage trouser, two combat T-shirts, two pairs of desert boots, two identity cards, and two jackknives. These items are believed to have been used to deceive the public and assert false authority. The possession of military uniforms and weapons by civilians is a serious offense under Nigerian law, especially when linked to acts of violence or intimidation. The police stated that the suspects are currently in custody and will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further legal proceedings.
The arrest comes amid heightened security concerns across Nigeria, where cases of impersonation and fraud involving military or security personnel are increasingly reported.
