Troops Recover Pistol, Arrest Suspects in Plateau State

Troops under Operation OPEP have arrested two suspects for illegal possession of a pistol during a stop-and-search operation in Kuru, Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State. The incident occurred at approximately 8:30pm on April 11, as security personnel from Sector 6 of Operation OPEP conducted routine checks in the area. The suspects were intercepted with a loaded pistol containing four rounds of 9mm ammunition, along with two mobile phones, a jackknife, and the sum of N1,700 in cash. A counter-insurgency and security expert in the Lake Chad region, Zagazola Makama, confirmed the arrest in a post on X, highlighting the ongoing efforts to curb gun violence and illegal arms circulation in the region.

Makama emphasized that the suspects are currently in custody and undergoing interrogation. Security operatives are working to determine the source of the weapon and whether the individuals have any links to criminal networks or organized crime. The arrest underscores the continued commitment of Operation OPEP to maintain law and order in Plateau State, particularly in areas prone to insecurity and armed robbery. The operation, which targets illegal firearms and criminal elements, has seen increased activity in recent weeks across the North Central region.

The seizure of the pistol and related items is a significant development in the fight against gun-related crimes in Nigeria. Plateau State, like many parts of the country, has faced challenges with armed banditry and illegal arms trafficking. The presence of armed suspects in civilian areas raises concerns about public safety and the need for stricter enforcement of gun control laws. Authorities have repeatedly called for community cooperation to report suspicious activities and prevent the proliferation of firearms.

Operation OPEP, established to combat insurgency and maintain peace, continues to deploy troops across strategic locations in the North Central zone. The recent arrest in Kuru is part of a broader strategy to dismantle criminal networks and reduce the incidence of violent crimes. Security experts believe that consistent patrols and intelligence-driven operations are essential to deterring potential offenders. The public is encouraged to remain vigilant and support security initiatives to ensure safer communities.

As investigations into the suspects’ background and weapon source continue, authorities remain focused on strengthening security infrastructure. The case also highlights the importance of public awareness campaigns on the dangers of illegal firearms. With ongoing operations like OPEP, Nigerian security forces aim to restore confidence in public safety and prevent future incidents. This arrest serves as a reminder that illegal weapons will not be tolerated, and those found in possession of them will face the full force of the law.
