A major political rift has erupted within the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Adamawa State, as a powerful faction led by Senator Aishatu Dahiru Ahmed Binani has announced a mass resignation from the party, citing a “total collapse of internal democracy.” The decision, made public after a stakeholders’ meeting at the residence of Hon. Mijiyewa Umaru Kugama, signals a significant realignment ahead of the 2027 general elections. The group, representing members from all three senatorial zones in the state, accused the ADC leadership at both state and national levels of undermining democratic principles and establishing illegitimate party structures.
The communiqué issued by the faction stated that the party’s leadership has destroyed internal democracy, violated the rule of law, and rendered the ADC’s state structure “illegitimate and unacceptable.” At the center of the dispute are the recently concluded party congresses, which the group claims were marred by manipulation and imposition under the leadership of Ishaya Bauka (retd). They allege that court rulings and existing injunctions were deliberately ignored, setting a “dangerous precedent of lawlessness” within the party.
The stakeholders further accused party officials of systematically excluding key members through intimidation and imposition, arguing that these actions have eroded the ADC’s credibility as a democratic platform in Adamawa. They declared that the outcomes of the disputed congresses are “null and void” and expressed a vote of no confidence in the current leadership. “We refuse to be part of a system that thrives on injustice, impunity, and illegality,” the communiqué read, underscoring their firm stance.
In a decisive move, the faction announced an “immediate and irreversible resignation en masse” from the ADC. While no new political party has been officially named, the group confirmed plans to align with a different platform, with Senator Binani tasked to lead the transition and coordinate a unified strategy for the next electoral cycle. The communiqué also outlined a coordinated defection plan spanning polling units, wards, and local government areas, backed by aggressive grassroots mobilisation under the new banner.
Political observers believe this development could reshape Adamawa’s political landscape, especially with Senator Binani expected to remain a key contender in the 2027 governorship race. The crisis also highlights growing tensions within opposition parties nationwide, with analysts warning that unresolved internal conflicts may weaken party cohesion ahead of future elections. This moment marks the beginning of a new political direction, the stakeholders said, one rooted in credibility, inclusiveness, and true democratic ideals. The fallout from this split is likely to influence party dynamics and voter alignment in Adamawa for years to come.
