Troops under Operation MESA have conducted a successful raid on an illegal mining site in Yagba West Local Government Area of Kogi State, arresting three suspects and recovering weapons, motorcycles, and cash. The operation, carried out on Saturday, April 13, at around 1:00 p.m. in Taki, was executed through coordinated efforts between soldiers from the 12 Brigade and local vigilante groups. The crackdown is part of intensified security measures aimed at curbing illegal mining and associated criminal activities in the region.
Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency and security expert in the Lake Chad region, confirmed the development in a post on X. He stated that the suspects apprehended during the operation claimed to be gold dealers and members of the Miyetti Allah socio-cultural group. The military’s swift action underscores the ongoing commitment to secure vulnerable areas and dismantle illegal economic activities that often serve as breeding grounds for violence and instability.
Among the items seized during the raid were one locally made pistol, four cartridges, two rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition, two motorcycles, three mobile phones, two cutlasses, and a total of N68,100 in cash. These recovered exhibits are now in military custody, pending further investigation and necessary legal action. The presence of firearms and ammunition highlights the potential for armed conflict and criminal escalation in areas dominated by illegal mining operations.
Security experts have long warned that illegal mining in parts of Kogi State has become a significant source of insecurity, often linked to armed robbery, kidnapping, and clashes between competing groups. The involvement of vigilantes in this operation reflects a growing trend of collaboration between military forces and local communities to enhance security and restore order. Such joint efforts are seen as crucial in addressing the root causes of crime and ensuring sustainable peace.
The military’s continued focus on Operation MESA demonstrates a strategic approach to tackling not just the symptoms but the underlying drivers of insecurity in the region. By targeting illegal mining sites, authorities aim to disrupt networks that fund criminal enterprises and threaten public safety. The operation in Taki serves as a clear message to those engaged in illicit activities that the government remains vigilant and proactive.
This latest development follows similar raids in other parts of the state, indicating a sustained campaign against illegal mining. As security forces intensify their operations, communities are being encouraged to report suspicious activities and cooperate with security agencies. The government’s efforts are expected to continue, with more operations likely in the coming weeks to ensure lasting peace and economic stability in Kogi State.
