A violent incident in Lau Local Government Area of Taraba State has led to the deaths of two men, including a forest guard, prompting the Taraba State Police Command to launch a full-scale investigation. The tragic event occurred in Mararaban Kunini, where a confrontation between a Forest Guard and a suspect escalated into a fatal stabbing, followed by a mob attack that resulted in the suspect’s death. Police have classified the incident as culpable homicide and retaliatory mob action, and are working to bring all involved to justice.
On Tuesday, the Commissioner of Police, Moorkwap Sebastian Dongshal, visited the scene for an on-the-spot assessment. He confirmed that the incident began when Forest Guard Jerry Jimmy arrested a suspect, Ya’u Jaro Saidu of Jegem Village, during routine duty. During the arrest, a violent confrontation broke out, and the suspect allegedly stabbed the officer with a knife, leading to his death. The suspect was later attacked and killed by a mob, an act the police described as retaliation.
Dongshal met with leaders from both the Fulani and Jenjo communities to address the tensions and urge calm. He emphasized the need for peaceful coexistence and warned against vigilantism, stressing that the rule of law must be upheld. Community leaders responded by pledging their commitment to peace and cooperation with security agencies to prevent further violence.
The police commissioner has ordered a comprehensive investigation to identify and apprehend all individuals involved in both the stabbing and the mob killing. Authorities are also urging residents to remain law-abiding and vigilant, and to report any suspicious activities to the nearest police station. The Taraba State Police Command reiterated its commitment to protecting lives and property across the state.
This incident highlights the fragile security situation in some parts of Taraba State, where tensions between communities and law enforcement can quickly spiral into violence. The police’s swift response and call for unity underscore the importance of maintaining order through legal channels rather than mob justice. As investigations continue, the state remains on high alert, with security forces working to restore peace and prevent further escalation.
