Troops Intercept Suspected Smugglers Along Bush Route in Borno

Five suspected smugglers have been apprehended by troops of Operation HADIN KAI during a joint security operation along a bush route connecting Borno and Yobe states. The arrest took place in the early hours of April 19, around 4:15 a.m., as part of intensified efforts to curb cross-border smuggling and illegal activities in the region. The operation was carried out by soldiers from the 27 Task Force Brigade in collaboration with members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), according to security sources cited by Zagazola Makama in a post on X.

The interception occurred along a remote bush path stretching between Yunusari and Bukarti, extending towards the Kaula and Gamari axis. This route spans parts of Abadam Local Government Area in Borno State and Yunusari Local Government Area in Yobe State, a region known for its porous borders and frequent smuggling activities. Security personnel spotted three Golf vehicles moving suspiciously along the route and swiftly moved to intercept them, leading to the arrest of the suspects.

Among those arrested are Ari Chune, 28, and Umara Sani, 24, both residents of Borno State. The other suspects include Tujjani Bogo, 32, Haruna Ibrahim, 17, and Lawan Ahmadu, 18, all from Yunusari LGA in Yobe State. The suspects were found in possession of a significant quantity of contraband items, including 39 solar panels, 10 surface pumping machines, 470 pieces of 2×2 wood, and 64 plastic fibre roofing sheets. These items are often smuggled across borders to avoid import duties and taxes, contributing to economic losses and undermining legitimate trade.

In addition to the goods, security forces recovered four Android smartphones, one small Tecno phone, and a total of ₦223,200 in cash from the suspects. The recovered items and the suspects are currently in the custody of the 27 Task Force Brigade for further investigation and possible prosecution. Authorities have not yet disclosed the exact destination or intended use of the smuggled goods, but such materials are frequently used in construction and off-grid energy projects, often without proper documentation.

This operation highlights the ongoing commitment of Nigerian security forces to combat smuggling and maintain border integrity. The collaboration between military units and civilian task forces demonstrates a coordinated approach to addressing security challenges in the northeast. As the investigation continues, authorities are expected to reveal more details about the suspects’ networks and the scale of the smuggling operation.

The successful interception sends a strong message to would-be smugglers and reinforces the government’s determination to secure Nigeria’s borders. With continued vigilance and joint operations, security forces aim to disrupt illegal trade and protect the nation’s economy.
