Troops Foil ISWAP and Boko Haram Attack in Northeast Nigeria

Nigerian Army troops under Operation HADIN KAI have successfully thwarted a terrorist attack in the Kirawa axis of Sector 1, North East, in the early hours of 22 May 2026, marking a significant blow to ISWAP/Boko Haram insurgents. The encounter occurred along the Nigeria–Cameroon border, where suspected terrorists attempted to infiltrate positions held by the 153 Task Force Battalion and allied forces. The military swiftly detected the incursion and responded with overwhelming firepower, forcing the attackers to retreat in disarray.

Lieutenant Colonel Sani Uba, Media Information Officer for Headquarters Joint Task Force (North East) Operation HADIN KAI, confirmed the details in an official statement. He noted that alert troops and Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) personnel held their ground, effectively containing the assault. The terrorists, caught off guard, sustained heavy casualties and were compelled to withdraw toward the Cameroon border, leaving behind clear signs of their defeat.

Intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance assets, supported by the Air Component of Operation HADIN KAI and partner forces, played a crucial role in monitoring and coordinating the response. These platforms provided real-time data that enhanced situational awareness and ensured a rapid, coordinated military reaction. The operation demonstrated the effectiveness of integrated military and civilian efforts in countering insurgency.

Following the engagement, Nigerian troops confirmed the neutralisation of 12 terrorists. Several others were seen fleeing with gunshot wounds, as evidenced by blood trails along their escape routes. Recovered weapons included AK-47 rifles, rocket-propelled grenade systems, ammunition, and a PKT machine gun. These seized materials significantly degrade the insurgents’ operational capacity in the region.

Troops remain stationed in the area with heightened vigilance, conducting exploitation operations to track down any remaining fleeing elements and recover additional weapons and supplies. The Joint Task Force reiterated its commitment to maintaining relentless pressure on terrorist groups until they are completely neutralised across the operational theatre.

The Military High Command commended the soldiers for their gallantry, professionalism, and swift response, calling it the third such successful operation within the week. This achievement underscores the military’s sustained effort to secure the North East and protect civilians. The ongoing operations reflect a strategic push to restore peace and stability in the region, with continued military and civilian collaboration at the forefront.
