The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has sharply criticized President Bola Tinubu’s administration, accusing it of widespread failure across key sectors including security, economy, healthcare, and education. In a statement released on Sunday, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, said the government’s inability to deliver on basic human dignity has led to growing discontent among Nigerians. He argued that the administration’s disregard for citizens at home is now being extended to those who have left the country in search of better opportunities, commonly referred to as “japa.”
Abdullahi took to X to express his concerns, stating that the current government has shown a consistent pattern of neglect toward ordinary Nigerians struggling under economic hardship and insecurity. He emphasized that this same attitude is now being directed at Nigerians abroad who have sought safer and more stable lives outside the country. “It is sad that this government, which has shown such disdain for everyday Nigerians that are struggling under the weight of its failures, has now chosen to extend that same disregard to honest Nigerians who have japa’d in search of better opportunities,” he wrote.
He further criticized the administration for making misleading claims about the state of Nigeria compared to the experiences of Nigerians living abroad. According to Abdullahi, a government that continues to fail in critical areas like security, economic stability, and public services has no moral authority to lecture those who have left the country. “A government that has failed, and continues to fail, on security, the economy, healthcare, education, and virtually every measure of human dignity has no business lying to Nigerians and the world that things are better for the Nigerians in Nigeria, than they are for Nigerians abroad,” he stated.
Abdullahi called on the government to take concrete actions to improve safety, create jobs, and restore economic confidence before making any claims about national progress. He stressed that until these fundamental issues are addressed, the government should stop criticizing citizens who have taken matters into their own hands to secure a better future. “Until this government can guarantee safety, create jobs, restore economic stability, and inspire confidence at home, it should either fix Nigeria or stop lecturing Nigerians who have simply done what the government itself has failed to do: secured a better future for themselves and their families.”
To underscore his point, Abdullahi cited economic data, noting that Nigeria’s total oil export earnings in 2025 were US$31.5 billion, while official diaspora remittances for the same year amounted to US$21.8 billion. This comparison highlights the significant financial contribution of Nigerians abroad to the national economy, despite the government’s failure to create conditions that would retain them at home.
As the debate over Nigeria’s future continues, the ADC’s criticism adds to growing public pressure on the Tinubu administration to deliver tangible results. The call for accountability and reform remains urgent as millions of Nigerians, both at home and abroad, await meaningful change.
