At least three people were killed and two others injured in a violent attack by gunmen on a construction site along the Sokoto-Badagry Superhighway in Maiyama Local Government Area of Kebbi State. The incident, which occurred on Tuesday in Gubba Village, Andarai District, targeted workers at the road project and resulted in the deaths of two security operatives and an expatriate worker. Two civilians sustained gunshot wounds and were rushed to a hospital for medical treatment.
According to Superintendent Bashir Usman, the Kebbi State Police Public Relations Officer, the attackers are suspected to be members of the Lakurawa terrorist group operating from the Kebbe axis of neighbouring Sokoto State. The assailants stormed the construction site unannounced and opened fire indiscriminately on workers present at the location. The sudden violence disrupted ongoing operations and left the area in shock.
Usman confirmed that another attack was reported the same day along the Birnin Malam axis, but it was successfully repelled by police teams deployed to the region. He emphasized that joint security forces have since responded to both incidents, with tactical units now stationed in the area to enhance surveillance and prevent further assaults. Security agencies are also conducting investigations to identify and apprehend those responsible.
In response to the attacks, construction activities at the affected site have been suspended indefinitely. Authorities have advised all workers to remain cautious and follow safety protocols while security personnel continue to patrol the area. Additional troops have been deployed to ensure the safety of remaining staff and to secure critical infrastructure along the highway.
The police have assured workers involved in the project of continued protection and urged them to stay calm amid heightened security measures. They stressed that efforts are underway to restore normalcy and safeguard lives and property across the region. The attack has raised concerns over insecurity along key transportation corridors in northwestern Nigeria, especially as development projects continue to expand in conflict-prone areas.
This incident underscores the persistent threat posed by armed groups in parts of northern Nigeria, even as government initiatives aim to improve infrastructure and economic growth. As investigations proceed, authorities are expected to intensify coordination among security agencies to prevent future attacks and ensure the safety of workers and residents in vulnerable zones.
