Operatives of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command have rescued Bashir Usman from being lynched by an angry mob in Kuje, after he was accused of attempting to abduct a five-year-old child. The incident occurred on Saturday, October 4th, in Angwan Lado, Kuje Area Council of the FCT, following a distress call received by police authorities. SP Josephine Adeh, the Police Public Relations Officer for the FCT Command, confirmed the rescue and provided details of the event in a statement issued on Tuesday.
According to Adeh, police operatives from the Kuje Division were swiftly deployed to the scene upon receiving the report. They arrived just in time to prevent a potential lynching, as the suspect was surrounded and being assaulted by an irate crowd. The mob had accused Bashir Usman of trying to snatch the young girl from outside her home, sparking immediate public outrage.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect was confronted and attacked by residents who believed he posed a threat to the child’s safety. However, the police emphasized that no formal charges have been filed yet, and the case is still under active investigation. Bashir Usman is currently held in protective custody while law enforcement officers work to verify the allegations and determine whether any accomplices are involved.
The FCT Commissioner of Police, CP Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi, has publicly condemned the act of vigilantism, warning that such actions constitute criminal offenses. He stressed that taking the law into one’s own hands is illegal and can amount to murder under Nigerian law. Sanusi urged citizens to report suspicious activities to the nearest police station instead of resorting to violence or mob justice.
This incident highlights ongoing concerns about public safety and the dangers of unchecked vigilante actions in Nigeria. While the community’s concern for children’s safety is understandable, authorities continue to stress the importance of due process and legal procedures. The police are now working to ensure a fair and thorough investigation into the allegations against Bashir Usman.
As the investigation unfolds, the FCT Police Command remains committed to upholding the rule of law and protecting both suspects and victims. This case serves as a reminder of the need for public awareness and cooperation with law enforcement to prevent tragic outcomes.
