The African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Niger State has officially declared its intention to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 governorship election, with Dr. Mohammed Kpautagi as its standard-bearer. The party’s state chairman, El Amin El Waziri, made this announcement during Kpautagi’s two-day tour of his constituency and parts of Zone A, culminating in a visit to his community in Mokwa Local Government Area. El Waziri emphasized that the ADC is positioning itself as an alternative to the APC, citing widespread hardship faced by Nigerians under the current administration as the primary reason for seeking a change in leadership.
During the visit, El Waziri stressed the importance of unity among Gwari, Hausa, and Nupe communities in supporting Kpautagi’s candidacy. He clarified that the delegation was not conducting a formal campaign but rather engaging in a gesture of appreciation with community elders. Despite this, he urged residents to rally behind the ADC’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, in the 2027 general elections, reinforcing the party’s national ambitions alongside its state-level goals.
The ADC Zonal Chairman, Gimba Tswatagi, praised Kpautagi as a disciplined grassroots politician with the capacity to deliver leadership that addresses the people’s needs. His running mate, Mamman Musa, spoke in Gwari, commending traditional and religious leaders for maintaining peace and harmony in the region. Musa also called on Gwari residents to actively support community development and back Kpautagi’s bid for governor.
The campaign team included Prof. Rabiu Bello Nasko, Director-General of the ADC campaign, who read a petition from the Kpautagi New Market Association. The petition requested additional market stalls, solar lighting, and other infrastructure improvements to enhance the market’s functionality and economic potential. This engagement highlights the party’s focus on tangible development projects at the grassroots level.
The ADC delegation also extended its outreach to Edati and Lavun Local Government Areas, where they paid courtesy visits to prominent traditional rulers—the Bima of Enagi and the Ezonuwon of Kutigi. These visits underscore the party’s effort to build strong relationships with local leaders across ethnic and regional lines. By consolidating support through community engagement and addressing local developmental concerns, the ADC aims to position itself as a credible opposition force ahead of the 2027 elections.
As political preparations intensify across Nigeria, the ADC’s campaign in Niger State reflects a broader push for inclusive governance and responsive leadership. The party’s emphasis on unity, development, and grassroots mobilization may shape voter sentiment in the coming electoral cycle.
