Plateau State Police Command has successfully neutralised a suspected kidnapper and recovered an AK-47 rifle in Gindri, Mangu Local Government Area, following a fierce gun battle with armed criminals. The incident occurred on Wednesday in the Changal community, where police detectives from the Gindiri Division were tracking a group of criminal elements. The operation resulted in the death of one suspect, identified as Ibrahim Abdullahi, a notorious figure known for terrorising communities in Gindri and surrounding areas.
The command’s spokesperson, Mr. Alfred Alabo, confirmed the development in a statement issued on Friday in Jos. He explained that the police team engaged the armed gang in a gun duel after they were ambushed during their surveillance operation. The confrontation led to the neutralisation of the suspect, who was reportedly leading the criminal group. Among the items recovered from the scene were an AK-47 rifle loaded with 16 rounds of 7.62mm live ammunition and a Redmi phone.
Alabo stated that the case has been handed over to the Violent Crimes Response Unit (VCRU) for further investigation. He added that once the investigation is complete, the suspect will be formally charged and prosecuted in court. The police are also working to determine if other members of the gang are still at large and may be apprehended in the near future.
Commissioner of Police in Plateau State, Mr. Bassey Ewah, praised the bravery and professionalism displayed by the officers involved in the operation. He commended their dedication and commitment to maintaining peace and security in the state. Ewah also reiterated the police’s determination to eliminate all forms of criminality from Plateau State, assuring residents that security operations will continue without relent.
The commissioner urged the public to support security agencies by providing timely and accurate information about criminal activities. He emphasized that community cooperation is essential to the success of ongoing anti-crime operations. Residents are encouraged to report suspicious movements or individuals to the nearest police station or through the state’s emergency hotline.
This development comes amid heightened security concerns in the region, where kidnappings and armed robberies have been reported in recent months. The successful operation in Gindri is seen as a significant step in the fight against crime. It demonstrates the police’s ability to respond effectively to threats and protect citizens. The state government remains committed to ensuring a safer environment for all residents, and similar operations are expected to continue across Plateau State.
