Police Dismiss Old Video Claiming Bandit Attack in Imo State

The Imo State Police Command has dismissed a viral video claiming recent bandit attacks in several communities within the state, confirming it as outdated footage and warning the public against spreading false information. The Command, through its Spokesperson Henry Okoye, stated that the circulating video is an old recording from July 25, 2025, involving an attack in Ndi-Ejezie, Umualaoma, and Ndiakuwata Uno Communities in Arondizuogu, Ideato North Local Government Area. The video, which shows armed men attacking communities, is being falsely presented as a recent incident, causing unnecessary panic among residents.

The Police described the video as misleading and deliberately crafted to instill fear and destabilize public confidence. They emphasized that the attack shown in the footage was carried out by unknown gunmen led by Ifeanyi Okenta, popularly known as Gentle the Yahoo. The incident resulted in loss of lives and triggered a swift response from security agencies. Following the attack, the Imo State Police Command, in collaboration with other security forces, launched intelligence-led operations that led to the arrest and prosecution of some suspects, while others were neutralized during gunfights with security operatives.

Commissioner of Police Audu Garba Bosso urged Imo residents to disregard the false video and avoid sharing unverified content that could undermine public peace and security. He warned that individuals who fabricate or circulate false security information will be identified, arrested, and prosecuted under the law. Bosso stressed the Command’s ongoing commitment to protecting lives and property across the state, reiterating its collaboration with other security agencies to maintain order.

He also encouraged the public to remain vigilant, rely on official channels for accurate information, and report any suspicious activities to the nearest police station. The Police reiterated that misinformation can be as dangerous as actual attacks, especially during times of heightened security concerns. The Command remains focused on apprehending remaining members of the criminal group involved in the 2025 attack.

As Imo State continues to face security challenges, the Police are urging citizens to support security efforts by staying informed through credible sources. The dismissal of the viral video underscores the importance of verifying information before sharing it, particularly in the digital age where misinformation spreads rapidly. The Police’s proactive stance reflects their determination to maintain stability and public trust in the state.
