Dr Oyelami Saliu, the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) governorship candidate for the August 15, 2026 Osun State election, has urged Nigerians to refrain from wishing Governor Ademola Adeleke dead, emphasizing that the incumbent would live to hand over power at the end of his tenure. Speaking during the 10th edition of the Media Parley hosted by the Osun Online Publishers Association (OOPA) on Friday, the medical practitioner made the remarks in response to the recent stage collapse incident involving Governor Adeleke. Saliu, who is positioning himself as a credible alternative to the current administration, stressed that political competition should not be marked by ill wishes or hostility towards opponents.
“Adeleke will not die; he will be alive to hand over to me,” Saliu declared, underscoring his confidence in his ability to win the upcoming election. He maintained that political discourse must remain respectful and focused on policy and development rather than personal attacks or negative sentiments. The PRP candidate acknowledged that Governor Adeleke has made efforts during his time in office, but argued that these efforts have not been sufficient to meet the expectations of Osun’s people. “The incumbent governor has done his best. Clearly, it is time to change the current leadership,” he stated, asserting that the PRP is ready to take over the reins of governance.
Saliu explained that his decision to contest the governorship was driven by a belief that Osun State needs a fresh approach to governance and sustainable development. “If Governor Adeleke was doing well enough, I would not be contesting against him,” he added, highlighting his conviction that a new leadership model is necessary. He assured voters that his administration would deliver better performance across key sectors, including health, education, infrastructure, and security. Saliu also pledged to sustain ongoing projects initiated by the current government that have proven beneficial to the people, demonstrating a commitment to continuity and progress.
On the contentious issue of airport development in Osun, Saliu said his administration would conduct a thorough assessment of the two airport projects currently under construction. He emphasized that decisions would be based on feasibility, economic impact, and long-term developmental benefits to the state. “We will prioritise projects that can truly drive growth and improve the lives of Osun people,” he noted. The PRP flagbearer expressed confidence in his party’s ability to provide the leadership needed to move the state forward, promising transparency, accountability, and inclusive governance.
As the 2026 Osun governorship election draws closer, Saliu’s message of unity, development, and respect in political discourse positions him as a candidate focused on the future. His campaign is expected to gain momentum as voters seek alternatives to the current administration, with the PRP aiming to carve a niche in a competitive political landscape.
