The Oyo State Police Command has arrested two individuals for spreading false information about a bandit invasion in Lamini Community, Ido Local Government Area, sparking widespread panic among residents. The suspects, identified as Pastor Amos Joel Muyiwa and Mulikat Bashiru, are currently in police custody following an intelligence-driven investigation. The police confirmed that no attack occurred, and the claims of six people being killed were entirely fabricated. The false alarm, which circulated via voice notes, led to immediate mobilization of patrol and tactical teams to the community.
The command’s Public Relations Officer, Olayinka Ayanlade, released a statement on Monday detailing the arrests. He emphasized that the suspects deliberately misled the public by spreading the unfounded report. According to Ayanlade, forensic analysis traced the incriminating voice note to Pastor Muyiwa, who was apprehended after the investigation. Mulikat Bashiru, who initially raised the alarm within the community, was also identified and arrested for her role in the misinformation.
Lamini Community, located in Ido Local Government Area, was left in fear after the false report spread rapidly through local networks. The police swiftly responded, deploying officers to verify the claims and ensure community safety. Upon arrival, they found no evidence of any attack or casualties. The investigation confirmed that the entire incident was a hoax, designed to cause unnecessary alarm and disruption.
The Oyo State Police Command stressed the importance of verifying information before sharing, especially during times of heightened insecurity. They urged the public to report suspicious activities to authorities rather than spreading unverified claims. The arrest of the two suspects serves as a warning against the misuse of social media and communication platforms to spread panic.
The police are also reviewing how such false reports can be prevented in the future, particularly in rural areas where misinformation can spread quickly. Authorities are working to strengthen community engagement and improve public awareness on the dangers of fake news. The case highlights the growing challenge of misinformation in Nigeria’s security landscape, where false reports can trigger unnecessary responses and strain law enforcement resources. As the investigation continues, the police remain committed to maintaining public order and ensuring accurate information flows freely. This incident underscores the need for responsible communication, especially in sensitive security environments.
