A 43-year-old man, Edebiri Temitope, has been arrested by the Ogun State Police Command for allegedly beating his neighbor to death with a bamboo stick after accusing him of hugging his 3-year-old son in Bluestone Treasure Estate, Mowe-Ofada, Ogun State. The incident occurred on August 26, leading to the death of Michael Oje, a 38-year-old Guidance and Counselling graduate of Benue State University. According to police, the suspect was initially reported to be at large but was later apprehended and transferred to the State CID in Eleweran, Abeokuta, for further investigation.
Michael Oje had just returned from work when the child, who lived on the same street, ran to him and hugged him. His younger cousin, Peter Adum, recounted that Michael responded by playfully lifting the boy into the air and catching him before going into his room to sleep. However, Edebiri Temitope, the child’s father, emerged from his house and knocked on Michael’s door. When Michael came out, the suspect accused him of playing roughly with his son, despite Michael’s explanation that he had only hugged and lifted the child gently.
The confrontation quickly escalated as Edebiri began slapping Michael. He then picked up a bamboo stick from the ground and struck Michael three times. Michael collapsed immediately and died on the spot. The suspect reportedly fled the scene with his family, prompting a swift response from law enforcement. The arrest was confirmed by DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, the Police Public Relations Officer, who stated that the suspect is now in custody and undergoing questioning.
The case has sparked concern among residents of the estate, many of whom are calling for justice and greater community safety measures. The circumstances surrounding the death highlight tensions around perceived threats to children and the need for calm resolution of disputes. Authorities have not yet disclosed whether charges will be filed or if there will be any additional legal actions against the suspect.
