The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Kano has arrested a 22-year-old man suspected of vandalising critical materials on the Federal Government’s Kaduna-Kano railway project, marking a significant step in safeguarding national infrastructure. The suspect, Sani Ismail, hails from Kuya village in Ikara Local Government Area of Kaduna State, and was apprehended in Kiru Local Government Area of Kano State following a tip-off from intelligence sources. Authorities say he was found in possession of a hammer, which was allegedly used to remove eleven rail line clips installed along the new standard gauge railway under construction. The clips are essential components for securing railway tracks and their removal poses a serious threat to the safety and progress of the project.
The NSCDC confirmed the arrest through a statement signed by its spokesperson, SC Ibrahim Idris Abdullahi, who detailed the findings of the preliminary investigation. The suspect’s actions are seen as a direct attack on a major infrastructure initiative aimed at boosting transportation and economic development across northern Nigeria. The Kaduna-Kano railway project is part of a broader effort to modernise Nigeria’s rail network and improve connectivity between key commercial hubs. Any sabotage could delay timelines, increase costs, and undermine public confidence in the government’s development agenda.
In a separate but related development, the NSCDC also arrested two other suspects identified as Yusuf Usman and Muhd Auwal, both 22 years old and residents of Kawo Jirga in Nassarawa Local Government Area of Kano State. These individuals were apprehended for impersonating civil defence volunteers, a crime that undermines the credibility and operational integrity of the NSCDC. The two men were operating from a location marked with the NSCDC logo, where they allegedly harassed and maltreated a social media comedian. The use of official insignia without authorization is a serious offence, and the command has concluded its investigation into the matter.
The NSCDC emphasized that legal actions will be taken against the two impersonators to deter similar acts in the future. The arrests highlight the corps’ commitment to protecting both physical infrastructure and institutional integrity. As the Kaduna-Kano railway project continues to advance, security agencies remain vigilant against sabotage and fraudulent activities. These developments underscore the importance of public cooperation in ensuring the success of national development projects. The NSCDC’s swift response sends a clear message that any threat to infrastructure or official institutions will not be tolerated. Moving forward, the government and security agencies will likely intensify surveillance and community engagement to prevent further incidents.
